Search engine optimisation (SEO) is how you help Google understand your website and show it to people searching for what you offer. It isn't a trick or a one-off job: Google's guidance consistently comes back to helpful, reliable, people-first content on a site that is technically easy to crawl. This checklist covers what most Malaysian business websites should get right.
On-page basics
- A unique title for every page. Google's SEO Starter Guide describes a good title as unique to the page, clear and concise. Include the service and, where relevant, the location (for example “Website Design Company in Kuala Lumpur”).
- A unique meta description. One or two sentences summarising the page — this is often what appears under your link in search results.
- One clear main heading (H1) per page, followed by logical subheadings.
- Descriptive URLs such as /services/website-design rather than /page?id=123.
- Image alt text that describes what the image shows.
Technical foundations
- HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate.
- An XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages. Google's mobile research found that bounce probability rises 32% as load time goes from 1 to 3 seconds.
- No broken links and a helpful 404 page.
- Structured data (schema.org) for your business, services, FAQs and articles.
Content that earns rankings
Each important service deserves its own page that answers real customer questions: what it is, who it's for, what's included, how long it takes and how to get started. Add an FAQ page, and publish useful guides (like this one) that show your expertise. Avoid stuffing keywords — Google says it doesn't use the meta keywords tag, and repeating phrases unnaturally doesn't help.
Local signals for Malaysian businesses
- Show your full business address, phone number and operating area consistently across your site.
- Create and verify your Google Business Profile, and keep its details identical to your website.
- If you serve Malay or Chinese-speaking customers, consider proper language versions of key pages rather than machine-translated copies.
Measure, then improve
Google Search Console shows which searches bring people to your site, which pages are indexed and where errors appear. Review it monthly: improve pages that get impressions but few clicks (often a better title and description helps), and expand pages that are close to ranking on page one.
