What Is GEO? How to Get Your Business Recommended by AI Search
GEO (generative engine optimisation) explained for Malaysian businesses: how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews find answers, and how to be included.

More people now ask an AI assistant instead of typing keywords into a search box: “What's a good web design company in Kuala Lumpur?” or “Which training providers offer HRD Corp claimable AI courses?”. The answer is a short summary with a few recommendations. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for these AI tools to find, understand, trust and recommend.
How AI search finds its answers
AI answer engines draw on web pages they can access and understand. For Google specifically, its Search Central documentation states that the same foundational SEO best practices apply to AI features, and that to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet — there are no additional technical requirements. In other words, GEO builds on good SEO; it doesn't replace it.
What GEO adds to SEO
- Direct answers. Put the answer near the top of the page in plain language, then explain. AI tools favour content that answers a question clearly.
- Question-and-answer structure. FAQ sections and headings phrased as real questions match how people ask AI assistants.
- Facts AI can verify. Specific, consistent details — what you offer, where you are, who you serve, how long things take — are easier to quote than vague marketing copy.
- Structured data. schema.org markup for your organisation, services, FAQs and articles helps machines read your pages reliably.
- Consistency everywhere. Your name, address, phone number and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
A simple GEO checklist
- Make sure every important page is indexed (check Google Search Console).
- Write one clear page per service, starting with a two-sentence answer to “what is it and who is it for?”.
- Add an FAQ page answering the questions customers actually ask.
- Add structured data for your business, services, FAQs and articles.
- Publish helpful guides that show expertise, with sources for any figures.
- Keep business details identical across your website and listings.
How to measure GEO
There is no single “AI ranking” report yet. Practical checks include asking AI assistants the questions your customers ask and noting whether your business is mentioned, watching for referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, and tracking your Google Search Console performance, since AI features in Google Search are built on its index.
Our GEO service structures your content and business information for AI search. GEO and Advanced SEO are both included in our All-in-One package.
